This site is intended as a resource for Jewish Sabbath-observant medical students who are seeking shomer Shabbos residencies. The Refael Society, the health professions section of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists (AOJS), has committed to dedicating resources to increasing awareness of Shomer Shabbos residency programs. To this end, I have created a central site for dissemination of information regarding shomer Shabbos residencies.
The site explains what a "Shomer Shabbos" or "Shabbos friendly" residency is and why Sabbath-observant medical students need to find one. Additionally, I propose a plan to include Shomer Shabbos residencies in the national match.
Advice is included on how to prepare for a residency interview with respect to Shabbos issues.
Lastly, I hope to use this site as a central clearinghouse for information regarding shomer Shabbos residencies and to build up a database of "shomer Shabbos" and "Shabbos friendly" residencies.
People are encouraged to send information on residency programs that are willing to accommodate Sabbath-observant residents. It has been my goal for many years to create a system by which residency programs are surveyed systematically, on a regular basis, to maintain an accurate, up-to-date, database for use by shomer Shabbos medical students each year in their residency search process.
If anyone is willing to offer time or money (to defray the cost of surveying programs) to this project, please contact me.
